Lenses (Implants)
June 29, 2005

We are currently gearing up for several new forms of refractive implant surgeries in our office. Details, such as pricing, etc. are being finalized. While the ReSTOR implant was tested by the FDA for use in patients with cataracts, it can be used in patients without cataracts, and also after LASIK, but these would be considered OFF-LABEL uses of the device. The FDA will probably never test the use of any implant in these categories. Its just the way the FDA works. They typically dont test the use of a new device over any previous surgery as it could complicate the interpretation of the results. OFF-LABEL device use is done everyday in medicine and you can learn more about this in our main websites Glossary. It is important that meticulous care is taken in the calculation of these implants, especially in the case of previous refractive surgery, as the corneal shape has been altered and this must be taken into consideration when doing the preparation for such an implant. I think this represents a very significant advancement for refractive surgery and may lead to a full lifetime of virtual independence from glasses and contacts.
